Polish more popular than English in Edinburgh schools

Polish is now more popular than English in Edinburgh’s primary and secondary schools. 96 languages are in use with over 3000 having a foreign tongue. Punjabi and Urdu are in second place whilst Arabic is third.

The number of children with English as a second language has almost doubled since 2005 and the enlargement of the European Union. Then, Polish did not even make the top five most popular languages.

Five additional languages have appeared this year in Edinburgh schools as new pupils have arrived – Afrikaans, Armenian, Maltese, Sindhi (an Iranian-based language) and Urhobo (a Nigerian-based language).

Many youngsters moving to Edinburgh from other countries cannot speak English at all, meaning additional resources have to be put into schools to help them learn.

“Live long and prosper” a variation on an ancient Egyptian blessing

“Live long and prosper” or “Tich tor ang tesmur” in Vulcan was originally spoken in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. However, the less-known reply is “Peace and long life.”

This format is similar to common Middle Eastern greetings (“Shalom Aleichem” in Hebrew and “Salaam alaykum” in Arabic), meaning “peace be upon you”, and its reply, “upon you be peace”.

An even more ancient variation can be found with the Ancient Egyptians: the blessing “ankh wedja seneb”, usually translated as “may he live, be prosperous, be healthy.”

Translating Food & Beverages in the Arabic World

Food and non alcoholic beverages have been characterized as the spice of life in the Arab countries, the elements that give flavour and zest to the culture, and yet, at times the tastes, textures and subtleties of the local dishes and beverages can be the most difficult to translate.  

Arabic Translators have to go to great lengths to try and reflect a product’s quality, paying particular attention to how it was processed and prepared or if it contains alcohol. There are some forbidden substances which must be explicitly explained to avoid any misunderstanding.
